【和文英訳】「～のおかげで」を英語で表現すると

問題

1. 私が今日あるのは母のおかげだ。（中央大）
2. 科学技術のおかげで、昔ならとても手が届かないと思われていたものが多く享受できるようになった。（県立広島女大）

所見

句：thanks to ~
Ex. Thanks to her help, he passed the exam.
（thanksは必ず複数形にします。文末に置くことも可能です）

節：owe ~ to ...
Ex. I owe my success to my teacher.
（文型は第3文型〈SVO〉になります。to my teacherは修飾語句（副詞句）の扱いです）

①thanks to ~は、例えば、「お前のおかげで試合に負けた」と言った「皮肉」を込めた表現としても使います。

今回の問題で使う表現

1. 「私が今日あるのは」⇒「今日の私」what I am today；the person I am today
2. 「科学技術」technologies；science and technology
   「手が届かない」out of one's reach；beyond one's reach
   「…できるようになった」は「現在形」でも書けますし、「別解」のように「完了形」も使えます。

解答例

1. I owe what I am today to my mother.
   別解　My mother has made me what [the person] I am today.
2. Thanks to technology, we can enjoy many things (which were) thought to be beyond our reach (in the past).
   別解　Technology has put in our hands many things thought (to be) out of [beyond] our reach.

所感

thanks to は「皮肉」の意味でも使うってよく言うけど、あんまり見たことないなぁ。僕の勉強不足なんだろうけど。

2.の問題はちょっと難しいな、という印象があります。「手が届かない」とか「享受する」とか。個人的に要復習です。

次の日本文を英語になおしなさい。

所見

下記のように言い換えると、訳せると思います。

1. 「つらい」⇒「私にはたいへんである」と考えましょう。
2. 「雨が降り出さないうちに」⇒「雨が降り始める前に」と考えましょう。
3. 「私の友人の多くが、10年前に創設されたソフトボールチームに在籍している」と考えましょう。
   ※「～に在籍［所属］している」belong to ~
   　「～を創設する」establish [found] ~

解答例

1. As it is getting colder and colder, it is hard for me to get up in the morning.
2. Let's go home before it starts [begins] to rain.
3. Many of my friends [Many friends of mine] belong to the softball team which [that] was founded ten years ago.

所感

1．の問題は言い換えよりも”As it is getting colder and colder,”が書けるか我ながら怪しいところです。

3．の問題は中学生がfoundという語彙（findの過去形ではない）を知っているかということが問題に感じられますが、どうやらformやmakeあたりも使用可能なようです。よかった。
